Brisbane Military

Despite a widespread climate of support for Britain , WWI saw Queensland
vote in an anti-conscription Labor government. Labor continued in
government until 1957, during which time a series of social and industrial
reforms were introduced. These included workers' compensation and
	  compulsory voting.

During World War II, many British, American and Australian troops were
based in Brisbane, and for some time the city was the headquarters for
General Douglas MacArthur. This was also the time of the infamous Brisbane
Line - a defence strategy whereby facilities south of this line drawn on
the map north of the city were to be defended and everything to the north
	  was to be abandoned.

As the Americans fought against Japan throughout the Pacific there were a
number of locations in the state that were transformed into military camps,
with thousands of US troops garrisoned in the Brisbane area. One of the
fundamental outcomes of this war was the realisation how vulnerable we are
to invasion, and consequently resulted in Australia shifting its allegiance
from the UK to the USA.
Brisbane's compact city centre is situated on a single bend of the river easily accessible to museums, galleries and heritage building
