Demographic socio-economic market segmentation tries to build up an ecommerce model of the market and of the likely customerbased on  socio-economic and demographic characteristics. Trade directories covering their own specific area of the market are published by many organisations, and these can obviously be useful in comparing ecommerce trends and relating your performance to competitors in the same market.
